We created a temporary exhibition space at the Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool, showing work in development.
During this event we set up two medium format slide projectors, a light table with more slides on show, created a temporary ‘sonic sofa’, gave a presentation about our work to date with ILLUME.
For the discussion we took the audience through the journey of making work within the town and with residents of Skem. The talk focused on seeing the public artworks as a form of alternative future being presented to the town, and how that translates into physical interventions within selected public spaces.
We also had the chance to show collaborations so far with artist André Stitt and musician Simon Tong. This took the form of an audio broadcast of extracts from Simon’s ADF piece, where the gallery’s sofa became the speaker (using an audio exciter).
Along with its the dead-ends and accompanying failures, we shared thoughts of which direction the work may go to an unknown audience, but at the same time, the conversations it generates can help shape the work or ideas in question. Saying something out loud can affirm its meaning or provide the confidence to ditch it; both equally as important.
We have now delivered several events and exhibitions showing our working processes to different audiences, discussing how we are making work collaboratively with artists and the towns’ residents. This process of sharing will go on to inform the next and final stage of ILLUME.
