During the research and development phase of the project, several co-creative events took place at a local school and on site, such as: ‘Walk with Me’ offering a story gathering tour of the site with a local historian, ‘Talk with Me’ utilising polaroid photography to capture street portraits in exchange for a shared story. Various trips to the Sheffield Museum’s stores, visit’s to ArcHeritage, exploring the Record Offices’ photographic archives, as well as Sheffield’s The Star newspaper collection, all of this information fed into the overall artwork, replicating the physical layering of the site itself.
Yorkshire Artspace and Sheffield City Council worked with Glassball to create a place-making public artwork in the Castlegate area of Sheffield. 175m of site hoardings, surrounding the now demolished Castle Market, was the space in which we created artworks reflecting the time depth of this area. From medieval castles, to an imprisoned Queen, fish and meat markets, to the present day demolition, leading to the future proposed transformation; many historical and social references were woven into a unique piece surrounding this site, known to be the birth place of Sheffield.
