The underpass at Waters Green in Macclesfield, Cheshire, represents a complex merging of the many layers of movement within a context of local heritage, folklore and everyday functionality.
During the commission Glassball delivered several events, which temporarily transformed the underpass for curated conversations to take place with those who use this space for getting to work, home, school or the shops. The final pieces play with positive and negative space, allowing for the viewer’s eye to make connections and ‘draw’ a physical and historical path through this area onwards to their destination.
The artworks would not of been rooted to the area without the kind photographic donations from local residents Martin Sykes and Martin Welch (who has been photographing Macclesfield since the 1940s), along with images from Arighi Bianchi’s store archives and many from the Cheshire Image Bank via the Cheshire Record Office, as well as the Macclesfield Museum’s collection.
